35e editie Zomercarnaval Rotterdam
Stichting Zomercarnaval Nederland bestaat sinds 1984 en is opgericht om cultuurontmoeting te entameren. Dit komt simpelweg neer op het inbedden van de tropische carnavalsuiting, zoals deze bekend is op de Antillen, in de Nederlandse samenleving.
Onze geschiedenis
Zomercarnaval werd voor het eerst in 1983 gevierd in Utrecht onder de naam ‘Antilliaans Zomercarnaval’, als equivalent van het carnaval in het Caraïbisch gebied. Een klein groepje studenten van Curaçaose en Arubaanse afkomst wilde hier van een klein cultureel, kunstzinnig groepje bestaande uit Curaçaose en Arubaanse carnavalisten werd Zomercarnaval Rotterdam een grootschalige multiculturele melting pot. Het tropische evenement werd zo divers dat niet alleen Antillianen en Arubanen, maar ook mensen uit Brazilië, Kaapverdië, Suriname, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Dominicaanse Republiek, Mexico, Bovenwindse eilanden, Spanje, Engeland, Trinidad, Jamaica, Frankrijk, Duitsland, België, Angola, Nederlanders e.a. besloten om mee te doen.
